SUBMISSIONS
UNDERLAND PRESS is CLOSED to unsolicited submissions.
The press publishes fantasy, dark fantasy, horror, science fiction, and noir mystery with a tinge of otherworldliness. In regards to horror, we prefer psychological and strange to straight-up blood-drenched narratives. As for the other genres, we are not terribly rigorous in our definitions, nor our observation of the nominal boundaries of these categories. We prefer character-driven pieces but don’t mind being kept up late due to a tightly wound, plot-driven book.
We are always interested in submissions from writers of underrepresented communities, including, but in no way limited to, writers of any gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, nationality, class, and physical or mental ability. Underland Press believes in the rich potential and diversity of humanity, and seeks to have that belief reflected in the catalog.
We are NOT interested in the following categories and types of fiction.
- Young Adult (YA) or Middle Grade (MG) material
- Works that have been previously self-published
- Works that are part of a series of books.
- Foreign-language submissions that would require translation into English.
Submissions should be 45k – 100k in length (novel-length, basically). Submissions should follow the Shunn format and be .doc or .docx (.pdf is also acceptable). Please submit them to editors@underlandpress.com with a brief cover letter that hits the highlights. Contracts are typically royalty-based and will include industry-standard grant of rights to the publisher.
We are not actively seeking novella length material, but the record will show that we have made exceptions to that guideline in the past.
Failure to follow these guidelines may result in your submission being summarily dismissed without any response.
If we have not responded to your submission within three months, you should consider this lack of response to be a pass from us. We’re saying this out loud to keep us on task as well.
