UNDERLAND PRESS is always keen on previously unpublished novel-length works of science fiction, fantasy, dark fantasy, and noir mystery with a tinge of otherworldliness. We don't mind slipping into horror, but prefer it to remain more psychological and strange than gore-filled. We are not terribly rigorous in our definitions of these genres. We prefer character-driven pieces but don't mind being kept up late due to a tightly wound, plot-driven book. Our interest is piqued by material that is not strictly beholden to the history of and/or culture of Western European civilization.

At this time we are NOT looking for short fiction collections, novella-length material, first books in series, Young Adult (YA) or Middle Grade (MG) material, and works that have been previously self-published. We will—in all likelihood—bounce submissions that fall into these categories.

In more concrete terms: novels should be between 75K and 100K in length. Submission format should be .doc, .rtf, or .pdf. Please submit them to with a brief cover letter that hits the highlights.

The COVID-19 ERA UPDATE: Okay, here's the deal. We're honestly not going to move forward on any projects for the next six months or so. We need to get a sense of what the post-quarantine landscape looks like for independent publishers before we tackle new projects. With that in mind, here are three things you should know:

  • If we have a manuscript from you already, please feel free to submit it elsewhere. If/when we look at manuscripts again, we will reach out and inquire as to the individual availability of manuscripts that we are interested in.
  • We are not actively looking for manuscripts at this time, though we are not officially closing submissions. See the previous item in regards to the state of the queue.
  • There is no need for you to ping us about the status of your manuscript. As long as this notice is here, you should assume that we're basically working from a simultaneously submission standpoint on all manuscripts. If this notice is NOT here, please do reach out and inquire about your manuscript.
